The Effect of Liraglutide on Blockade for Preventing Variceal Bleeding: A Case Series

Case series of 18 patients receiving propranolol to prevent variceal bleeding found that addition of liraglutide (to treat co-existing type 2 diabetes) reduced the efficacy of propranolol (raised the heart rate) even with increasing doses of propranolol.

SPS commentary:

Authors suggest an interaction between propranolol and liraglutide that results in an escape from-adrenergic receptor blockade via a mechanism that has not yet been fully elucidated.
