The effects of plasma exchange in patients with ANCA-associated vasculitis: an updated systematic review and meta-analysis

Review (9 RCTs; n=1060) found plasma exchange, added to standard therapies, had no important effect on mortality, reduced 12-month risk of end stage kidney disease, regardless of baseline kidney function, and increased risk of serious infections, a previously unrecognised effect.

SPS commentary:

This review was conducted as part of the BMJ Rapid Recommendations project and informs a BMJ Rapid Recommendation addressing plasma exchange in addition to immunosuppression and glucocorticoid therapy in patients with severe ANCA-associated vasculitis.
