The Influence of Baseline Diastolic Blood Pressure on the Effects of Intensive Blood Pressure Lowering on Cardiovascular Outcomes and All-Cause Mortality in Type 2 Diabetes

Review of the ACCORD BP trial found that intensive systolic blood pressure lowering decreased the risk of the CV composite event in the standard glycaemic arm, but not the intensive glycaemic arm. Low baseline diastolic blood pressure did not attenuate these associations.

SPS commentary:

Authors highlight that from these results, low baseline diastolic blood pressure should not be an impediment to intensive systolic blood pressure lowering in patients with type 2 diabetes treated according to guidelines recommending standard glycaemic control.
