The Lancet Commission on diabetes: using data to transform diabetes care and patient lives

This Commission discusses the global burden of diabetes, achievements made in diagnosis and treatment and trends in incidence. It makes recommendations to drive a change in policy responses worldwide and close gaps in diabetes prevention, care, data, and professional knowledge.

SPS commentary:

A related editorial notes that this Commission is the product of 4 years of work by international experts in public health, clinical care, epidemiology, and health economics, to critically reflect on progress and develop evidence-based recommendations. It is recognised that the diabetes epidemic is driven by an interwoven set of structural factors including poverty, inequality, ageing, poor nutrition, food insecurity, low educational attainment, and environmental pollution, and that Covid-19 has intensified these structural challenges.
