Type 2 diabetes in adults: management – glucose monitoring DRAFT guidance

DRAFT update to NG28 makes recommendations on self-monitoring of capillary blood glucose, and when to offer intermittently scanned (flash) continuous glucose monitoring (isCGM). Real-time CGM is an alternative to isCGM if available at the same or lower cost.

SPS commentary:

NICE have also made DRAFT updates to NG17 and NG18 incorporating advice on glucose monitoring.

For management of type 1 diabetes in adults (NG17), NICE recommend patients are offered a choice of real-time CGM or intermittently scanned CGM based on individual preferences, needs, characteristics, and functionality of the devices available.

For management of diabetes [type 1 and type 2] in children and young people (NG18), NICE recommend offering real-time CGM to all children and young people with type 1 diabetes. Intermittently scanned CGM can be offered to those >4yrs who are unable to use real-time CGM or who express a preference for it.
