US gives emergency approval to chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine despite lack of evidence

The US FDA has issued an Emergency Use Authorization for emergency use of oral formulations of chloroquine phosphate and hydroxychloroquine sulfate for the treatment of Covid-19, despite warnings from scientific advisers that there is no RCT to support safety and efficacy.

SPS commentary:

The MHRA has issued a reminder that chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine should only be used to treat or prevent COVID-19 within a clinical trial, until there is clear, definitive evidence that these treatments are safe and effective.
