Use of methenamine hippurate to prevent urinary tract infections in community adult women: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Review (6 studies; n=557 [447 analysed]) found insufficient evidence to be certain of benefits of this agent, which is not known to cause antibiotic resistance, and acts as a bacteriostatic agent through the production of formaldehyde from hexamine in the urine, to prevent UTI.
