World Health Organisation’s global advisory committee on vaccine safety reviewing AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccine

A World Health Organization expert advisory committee is currently looking at AstraZeneca’s COVID-19 vaccine after some countries suspended its use, following reports of the formation of blood clots in some people who have been vaccinated.

SPS commentary:

Some EU Member States have paused vaccination with the AstraZeneca vaccine as a precautionary measure, while a full investigation is ongoing into reports of blood clots in people who received the vaccine.

The PRAC is already reviewing all cases of thromboembolic events, and other conditions related to blood clots, reported post-vaccination with COVID-19 Vaccine AstraZeneca. The PRAC has stated there is currently no indication that vaccination has caused these conditions, which are not listed as side effects with this vaccine, and it considers that the vaccine’s benefits continue to outweigh its risks and the vaccine can continue to be administered while investigation of cases of thromboembolic events is ongoing.
